The Veil of Gold and Enchantment

The Veil of Gold and Enchantment share several similarities:

–Both take place in Russia.
–Both have time travel as a central theme in their plots.
–Both are fantasies
–And both were my favorite books the year I read them.

My favorite genre is Science Fiction and Fantasy (SF/F) and time travel stories is one of my favorite subsets of SF/F.  When done correctly such as with these two books, SF/F and time travel specifically can shine brightly.

In The Veil of Gold, a golden bear is discovered in the ruins of a Russian bathhouse.  Scientist, Daniel St. Clair is determined to find the bear’s origin and he travels with Em Hayward, a colleague to a University to determine the bear’s age.  Somewhere on the trek, he slips through time.   The Veil of Gold is a definite page turner and if you’re a fan of time travel stories, even if you’re not, I think you will agree that this is a book not to miss.

Enchantment is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty.  Retellings of classic fairy tales is another one of my favorite sub genres of SF/F.  As with The Veil of Gold, Enchantment takes place in Russia and time travel is central to its theme.  If you’re familiar with the Russian folklore tale of Baba Yaga, you’ll be in for a nice surprise.

Please don’t let these two books pass you by because you “don’t read Science Fiction and Fantasy.  You’ll be doing yourself a disservice.

Until next time…
…Turn the page.
