My friend, Jason who I mentioned in Monday’s column Water Wheels and Writing is making an encore visit today. We talked on Monday night about Robin Williams apparent suicide. Knowing my worldview has shifted in the twenty plus years he has known me, Jason wanted to hear my thoughts. This is what I believe about transitioning at one’s own hand:
It is a one way direct ticket back to incarnation. You don’t get to Transition Tunnel or Transition Station. Taking your own life is a one way ticket back.
When I mentioned this, Jason said:
Interesting. The learning soul.
Classroom: Wikimedia | Soul and Angel: Lingnan University | Robin Williams: Wikipedia |
So I owe Jason credit for the title of this column.
See? In my worldview:
There is no direct punishment.
There is no vengeance.
There is no selfish act.
EVERYTHING becomes a learning tool. Hence the learning soul.
God is NOT vengeful.
God does NOT punish.
God is love.
How can someone equate love and vengeance?
How can someone equate love and punishment?
When someone takes their own life, they are giving up. They can’t face another day. There is ALWAYS hope, however. You just have to find it. I completely understand that this is an emotional topic, an emotional issue. And I’m NOT making light. Believe me. I was there at one point myself. I think we all were. I was fortunate to have reached out. I wrote about it in Been There, Done That. I don’t think I would have EVER sunk so low as to actually follow through. Life is too precious. Life has ALWAYS been a gift to me. Which in no way means that people who transition at their own hands don’t see life as a precious gift. I’m sure they do. They simply reach a point where they can’t carry forward. I read somewhere online on Monday that we don’t truly know someone if we only see their public profile, the persona they put forward in public.
Someone may APPEAR to have all their stuff together in public. In private however, they may be wrestling with challenges we never see. They may feel that they can’t shatter that happy profile they show to the world. I’m sure you’ve heard said that the funniest people have the most emotional distress in their lives. It’s because they need a release. They need to release all that negativity. Comics turn the negative. They twist emotional distress into comedy. The next time you hear a comic, don’t SIMPLY hear them, listen to what they say. You may come away with a deeper understanding of what is happening or what HAS happened to them.
We may never know what caused Robin Williams to take his own life on Monday, but we DO know that he wrestled with his own challenges. He was very forthright about his addictions:
Alcohol and drug abuse.
Obviously, he used these substances to mask his emotional distress, just as he used his comedy to do the same. At some point, when these things no longer worked, he simply couldn’t move forward. A shame Mr Williams didn’t have someone he could turn to, or something other than the masking agents he used. A shame he couldn’t turn to his Higher Power when he was at his lowest point.
While I completely understand that actors and the roles they play are distinctly separate from each other, someone who starred in movies like:
Dead Again and What Dreams May Come would, you’d THINK understand that life is an echo, that life constantly repeats itself, that we don’t simply transition once. Surely, something in those movie scripts resonated with Williams, otherwise he wouldn’t signed on to act in them. Something in the stories must have rung true with him. You’d think that would have been the case, wouldn’t you? I can’t help but reflect on Robin William’s role in Dead Again as Cozy Carlisle when he discussed the topic of karma. Or one of the last scenes in What Dreams May Come:
The two kids in the boat floating on a river. And Robin Williams as Chris Neilsen saying:
I found you in Hell. Don’t you think I can find you in Jersey?
Knowing all these things about Robin Williams, it would appear to me to be completely opposite of anything he would consider. And yet as I suggested above, we ONLY know the public Robin Williams. We don’t know the private person he was.
Still, I cling to the thought that transitioning at one’s own hand is a one way DIRECT ticket back to the physical. There is NO transition tunnel. There is NO transition station. You don’t get to see your soul group.
You MUST return to the physical to learn the lesson that life is a gift and you can’t and shouldn’t return that gift until your prescribed time is written. We all return over and over. However when we transition at the determined time, our reward is being reunited with those in our soul group. If we take matters in our own hands we don’t get to see our soul family.
That is NOT a punishment.
That is a lesson we must learn.
Life is a precious gift and we should not give it back unwrapped.
Be Happy! Be Well! Be Positive!
Blessings to you.

Once you realize that life is eternal,
That our souls our eternal,
That we return to light and physical over and over;
We then lose all our distress
We then lose all our fear of dying. For there truly is no end.
