I read What Dreams May Come the first time in the mid 1990s after meeting Richard Matheson at the World Horror Convention in Stamford, Connecticut in 1993.  My friend, Jason Marchi and I went to the convention together as we were both writing dark fantasy at the time.  This book changed my entire perspective on life and death.  It was my introduction to the belief in reincarnation and past lives.  Upon finishing the book I realized just how much sense it made that we always return.

What Dreams… is a very emotional book and I’m not ashamed to admit that with both readings I shed some tears.  I’ve also watched the movie several times and while the book is a different flavor, the movie also holds a very special place in my heart. Now after reading the book again, I clearly see many similarities in my worldview and this book.  In several cases, Richard Matheson states that what we believe in life is what we will see in transition.  That’s a question I presented in a column here at Wisdom and Life:
What Do You Believe

The quote above is a clear example of this.  I suppose what I’m suggesting is:
–If someone you’re close to has transitioned, please believe they are still close by, that they still exist.
–If someone tells you something about the transitioned soul that ONLY you and they would know, don’t dismiss the information.

As in the book and the movie, you don’t want the transitioned soul attempting to contact you and let you know they are safe, only to met by that impassable barrier.  If my readers know someone who does not have a belief in the soul transcending our physical self, then it is important to do your best to show them that we do exist beyond transition. That death REALLY is simply a transitory state.

I implore anyone who hasn’t read What Dreams May Come, find the book.  Read it.  Then tell me your perspective hasn’t changed.  Look for the movie as well.
