Anyone who knows me in the LEAST, understands that reading is part of who I am. It’s why the last two jobs I’ve had have been book centric. RJ Julia Booksellers in Madison, Connecticut and The Scranton Library in Madison, Connecticut. The funny thing is when I grew up, you couldn’t pay me to read. Now you’d have to pay me NOT to read.
Alright. With that established, let’s play a little reading game:
Before we begin let me just start out by saying that I’ve discussed these two books countless times before at Wisdom and Life. However, as with all topics here it is always nice to circle back around. Sometimes for new readers who haven’t been with me since this blog’s inception and sometimes it’s also good to get a repeat once in awhile.
If you had to choose two books that best described who you are. which two books would they be? Which two books would you NOT want to be without? Which two books have become so much a part of you are, that to take them away from you would be as if someone reached in and pulled out your very soul? I’ll start:

I read this book for the first time in the early 1990s and it entirely changed my whole perspective on life and death. Few books have had such a life altering experience for me as this book did. What Dreams May Come tells the story of Chris Nielsen who dies in a fiery car accident leaving his wife and children behind. What comes next is the story of Chris doing everything is his limited power to comfort Annie, his wife, doing everything he can to show her that life moves even when one has transitioned. What Dreams May Come was my introduction to the theory of Past Lives and reincarnation. It’s why the book has become so important in my library. And it is why I firmly believe as I stated in a Facebook post a couple weeks ago that it is one book that all of humanity should read. It’s one book that needs to be required reading for every living human. It could change everyone’s life if they let the ideas in the book permeate.

This book is important to me as well because it introduced me to the fact that I am most likely a Universalist. Whether or not Rob Bell is a Universalist is up for debate. However, his book points to many claims that Universalists make.
Another reason I identify so strongly with this book is Bell’s claim that a loving God would not choose a select few people to save. If God is all loving wouldn’t that entity want to save all of humanity? That’s my reasoning too. And it’s why this book is in my top two spiritual books to have and why I feel as I do with What Dreams May Come that all of humanity can benefit from reading it.
