Footprints in the Sand

I first discovered the poem, Footprints in the Sand at my maternal grandparents home. I VIVIDLY remember finding it as prayer card sitting on a desk in my grandfather’s room, right beside a black rotary telephone. I couldn’t have been much older than ten. Even at that early age I can recall being blessed with a strong faith. Finding the poem only solidified my faith.

So see? Even at that age I was on this path. I picked up the card and read it and re-read it. The poem made a HUGE impact on me and every time I read it now, I’m back in the green room that was my grandfather’s bedroom.

Amazing how certain events in your life resonate so deeply that when you’re reminded of them, you’re AUTOMATICALLY transported back in time to the first time the event took place.

I’m sure everyone has a similar experience that has become a part of them, such a part that it simply cannot be separated from them.

If you’ve never seen this poem, read it once, then reflect on it and read it again. If you HAVE seen the poem, then read it again and find new joy in knowing that God is ALWAYS with you!

I hope I don’t lose any of you with all my God talk recently. I just want to show that HE plays an integral role in my life. You can’t take HIM away from me. I would simply cease being who I am if you attempted to split us.

Here’s the poem:

Footprints in the Sand

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed
he was walking along the beach with the LORD.

Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene he noticed two sets of
footprints in the sand: one belonging
to him, and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.

He noticed that many times along the path of
his life there was only one set of footprints.

He also noticed that it happened at the very
lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he
questioned the LORD about it:

“LORD, you said that once I decided to follow
you, you’d walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most
troublesome times in my life,
there is only one set of footprints.
I don’t understand why when
I needed you most you would leave me.”

The LORD replied:

“My son, my precious child,
I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering,
when you see only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you.”
